What Happens in 2 Samuel 14?
After Absalom fled to Geshur for killing his brother Amnon, King David longed to see him again—but didn’t take steps to bring him back. Sensing this tension, Joab, David’s military commander, sets a plan in motion.

Joab enlists a wise woman from Tekoa to deliver a parable to David—about a widow whose two sons fought and one killed the other. The people want to execute the surviving son, but she pleads for mercy. David rules to spare the son, and the woman flips the script: “Why then won’t you bring your own son home?”

Convicted, David agrees. Absalom is allowed to return to Jerusalem, but David refuses to see him face-to-face. For two years, Absalom lives in limbo. Eventually, frustrated, he sets Joab’s field on fire to get his attention.

Joab arranges for Absalom to meet David. The chapter ends with Absalom bowing before the king—and David finally kissing his son, a fragile reconciliation.
