A Filmmaker You've Never Heard Of - She's That Important

Gunilla Bresky first came to Russia in 1995, and since has returned to Russia over 100 times. A cultural exchange program in Archangel between Swedes, Norwegians, Finns and Russians introduced her to Russia and changed her life.

Gunilla is a Swedish journalist and filmmaker from the North of Sweden who is a relatively unknown filmmaker, but has become an expert on Russia in WWII, and someone who has observed the miracle rise of Russia from the ashes of the collapse of the Soviet Union to the country it is today.

Her 6 films are stories about Russian people in WWII that most have never heard of, but in her unique way of storytelling come to life and provide viewers with important insights about that Great Patriotic War.

We talked in detail about the making of Night Witches and Mikosha. The Night Witches is about the brave young women fliers who bombed Germans along the front. Mikosha is about a Russian cinematographer and photographer who covered the war in Sevastopol.

Gunilla was never able to find a distributor for her films, and she has been opposed to publishing them on social media channels. Only a pirated version of Night Wolves is available on YouTube.
