California to release illegal immigrant convicted in deaths of two teens
"The pain written all over Pavel Osokin’s face as he recalls the moment he was told that his son Nikolay and his 19-year-old girlfriend, Anya Varfolomeev—friends since childhood—had died.
They told me there was a horrible incident.
My son and his girlfriend Anya were basically burned alive in their car.
She was my daughter. Anya’s father, Anatoli, got a similar knock on the door that same night.
He said a name. I said yes, that's my daughter.
My wife came downstairs, screaming and crying.
She kept saying no, no, no, no.
In the spring of 2022, a jury found Oscar Eduardo Ortega Anguiano guilty of two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
A judge sentenced him to 10 years, but on Easter Sunday, the families say they received this notice from the California Department of Corrections, stating that on July 19, he will be released.
Two years for killing two kids.
It’s confusing to me. Why give him 10 if he's only going to serve 5 and then three?
Yes, two young, productive American citizens killed for nothing.
And that illegal immigrant, who had already been deported twice, is going to be released again.
In a statement, the Department of Corrections did not confirm the release, but said in part, quote:
“Incarcerated persons may earn credits for participating in rehabilitative programming, which may move their parole dates to an earlier date.”
Anya and Nikolai’s families are now sending letters to the state, calling for Ortega Anguiano to serve his full sentence.
All those dreams were cut short by one person who wasn’t even supposed to be on that freeway.
I will never forgive that guy.
Never, ever.
I hope he stays in prison.
I hope he grows old in prison.
And I hope, in the end, he is kicked out of our country."
Anya Varfolomeev, a 19-year-old young woman, tragically died alongside her boyfriend Nikolay Osokin when an illegal immigrant, Oscar Eduardo Ortega Anguiano, crashed into them while driving under the influence, causing both teens to be burned alive in their car. The incident occurred in California and shocked the families, who described the sentence as unjust, since Ortega Anguiano was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was set to be released after serving only two.
In response to public outrage, President Donald Trump intervened, denouncing the case as an example of the failure of California's lax immigration policies and as an injustice to American citizens. Trump expressed his solidarity with the families and reaffirmed his commitment to border security, law enforcement, and the deportation of repeat criminal illegals. He also urged that Ortega Anguiano serve his full sentence and be expelled from the country after his release.
