Three Things You Won't Know About Copenhagen
Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen is not just a resting place for the dead—locals treat it like a park. It’s common to see people jogging, reading, or even having picnics there. It's also the burial site of famous Danes like Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard.
Copenhagen is home to Freetown Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood that started as a hippie commune in the 1970s. It has its own rules, is car-free, and operates semi-independently from the Danish government. Photography is restricted in certain areas, and there's a famous “Green Light District” for cannabis sales.
While Denmark’s Viking history is no secret, it’s surprising to find actual Viking runestones casually displayed in central Copenhagen. Some are outside the National Museum or in churchyards, accessible without any grand display—just part of the everyday landscape.
