Lou Reed (March 2, 1942 – October 27, 2013) was an American musician, singer-songwriter, and poet, best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the Velvet Underground and for his influential solo career. Velvet Underground (1964–1970): Reed formed the band with John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Maureen Tucker. Their debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), produced by Andy Warhol, was groundbreaking for its raw sound and provocative lyrics in songs like “Heroin” and “Venus in Furs.” Though initially commercially unsuccessful, the band’s influence grew over time, inspiring punk, alternative, and art rock.
Solo Career: Reed’s solo work began with Lou Reed (1972), but Transformer (1972), produced by David Bowie, brought mainstream success with hits like “Walk on the Wild Side” and “Perfect Day.” Later albums like Berlin (1973), a dark concept album, and New York (1989), a gritty reflection on his city, showcased his storytelling and emotional depth.
