MAC 9DS vs AF Romulus

Today we’re taking a closer look at two modern 1911 double-stack pistols: the Alpha Foxtrot AF1911 Romulus and the MAC 9DS-D Comp from Military Armament Corporation. Both are full-size, optics-ready, 9mm platforms with recoil mitigation features — but they handle and perform very differently once you get them to the range.

The Romulus brings a cleaner, competition-ready build with a SUS416 stainless frame, a DLC finish, tight fitment, and a single-port compensator built into the bull barrel. It stays extremely flat during rapid-fire strings and has one of the crispest triggers I’ve tested — about a 2.5-pound pull.

The MAC 9DS Comp, on the other hand, has a more rugged, duty-built feel with forged steel construction, deeper serrations, aggressive grip features, and a ported barrel to help control muzzle rise. It also brings some serious value: optics-ready with an Agency Arms AOS plate system that allows co-witnessing, customizable trigger shoes, and all under $1,000.

Both had minor hiccups during testing, but each brings a different advantage to the table depending on what you’re looking for — precision and polish vs. price and durability.
