FDA And HHS Move To Ban Synthetic Dyes Linked To Health Issues In Children

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Mary Makary announced a ban on artificial food dyes during a press conference on Tuesday.

Both agencies are working to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, which are present in numerous foods such as breakfast cereals, candy, snacks, and beverages.

"Today, the FDA is taking action to remove petroleum-based food dyes," Makary said at the beginning of the press conference. "For the last 50 years, American children have increasingly been living in a toxic soup of synthetic chemicals. The scientific community has conducted a number of studies raising concerns about the correlation between petroleum-based synthetic dyes and several health conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance, cancer, genomic disruption, and GI issues."

Makary noted the steps the FDA will be taking to remove food dyes from the nation's food supply.

"As I know from my experience [in] taking care of children as a doctor, you have to always listen to the mom," He said.

Kennedy took the stage, commending food companies for wanting to work with the MAHA movement to phase out these food dyes.

"When I went in a few months ago to meet with food companies, I was talking with my staff about this and I said, if they want to eat petroleum, they ought to eat it themselves at home and they shouldn't be feeding it to the rest of us."

Kennedy said that in four years, most of these products will be off the market. He said that Americans will be able to identify products that are complying with the phase-out with an open-source website, as well as labeling.

"We're looking at labeling. We have to go to Congress for that — but one of the things that we're going to do is post all the information we have about every additive on an open-source website," Kennedy said. "And we're going to encourage companies to develop apps in the private marketplace where mothers can go in and scan a barcode of every product in their grocery store and know what's in them and what's not."

Some studies have linked these dyes to neurological problems in children.

There are currently nine petroleum-based dyes allowed in U.S. food.

Earlier this year, the Food & Drug Administration banned the use of Red No. 3 in any foods, drinks, or ingested drugs.

The FDA has given food manufacturers until January 15th, 2027, to remove all Red No. 3 from their products. Dietary supplements will get an additional year. Some states, like California, already have a ban in place.
