The Gospel of John Ch 7. Part 2. Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles. Part 2.
This was one of 3 Feasts of the LORD that required all Jewish males 20 and over within 100 miles (or so) of Jerusalem to go to Jerusalem for those feast days: Passover, Shavuot (feast of week in the spring and feast of tabernacles in the fall.
19 “Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill ME?”19 “Did not Moses give you the law, yet none (not even one) of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill ME?”
Their assumption is that Yeshua is paranoid, crazy, suffering also perhaps from delusions of grandeur. The Scribes had accused HIM of being in league with the prince of demons Beelzebub where HE was casting out Demons (MAR 3:22).
That one work caused the Jews to be amazed. But not amazed so that they praised the One Who did it Yeshua, they were mad that HE told the man to carry his mat, on a Sabbath. Openly defying the man-made rule for proper Sabbath conduct.
The question, then, is which law takes precedence: The command that the child be circumcised on the eighth day (regardless), or the prohibition against doing any work on the Sabbath day?
The iconic figure of Justice has a blindfold for this reason. Although the image or symbol does go back to some ancient Greek goddess, so perhaps I should not use it. However, our current justice system is certainly not blind, it is corrupt. Perhaps that is changing, at least for the time being.
It must have taken at least some by surprise that Yeshua makes a public statement even in the face of such a threat. Yeshua was never afraid or intimidated by the threats against HIM. HE still spoke boldly, and HE did so with such boldness that no one could make HIM stop.
The people say that when the Messiah comes, no-one will know where HE is from. But that is not what the TANACH says. In fact MIC 5:2, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
This first sentence of Yeshua’s reply: You both know ME, and you know where I am from; may well have been Divine sarcasm almost a question. They thought they knew where HE was from, and they did in the earthly realm, but they were unaware of HIS Heavenly origin.
JOH 5:46-47, If you believed Moses, you would believe ME, for he (Moses) wrote about ME. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”
There were many traditions about the coming Christ’s unknown origins, which as we have seen was really not the case. The prophet Micah wrote that the Messiah would come from Bethlehem. There were even more traditions that had to do with the coming Messiah’s miraculous powers. The Jewish people standing in the crowd were actually asking a good question: When the Messiah comes, will HE do even more than what this Man Yeshua has done and is doing?
