Biography of Sheikh Salim Chishti and the history of his shrine
Dekhti Aankhooon aur sountay kaanoon ko Asslamoalaikum, sisters, brothers friends and elders, in informative series videos of Islamic ascolars, sufisaints, cultural heritages, islamic philosophys, islamic mysticisms and historical figures. today we are describing biography of Sheikh Salim Chishti and the history of his shrine.
Sheikh Salim Chishti, also known as Sheikh al-Hind, was a highly revered Sufi saint of the Chishti Order during the Mughal era in India. He was a spiritual successor in the illustrious Chishti Sufi lineage and a descendant of the famous Sufi saint Baba Farid (Sheikh Fariduddin Ganjshakar). Known for his deep piety, ascetic lifestyle, and powerful spiritual presence, Sheikh Salim Chishti played a central role in the religious life of his time and became closely associated with the Mughal Emperor Akbar. One of the most notable stories surrounding Sheikh Salim Chishti is his blessing to Akbar, who had been seeking a male heir for years. Akbar visited Chishti’s hermitage in Sikri, near Agra, to seek prayers, and after receiving the saint’s blessing, Akbar's consort Mariam-uz-Zamani gave birth to a son. In gratitude, Akbar named the child 'Salim,' who would later become Emperor Jahangir.
Sheikh Salim Chishti passed away in 1572 CE. Following his death, Emperor Akbar, who held the saint in the highest reverence, took personal initiative in constructing a magnificent white marble mausoleum in his honor. The shrine of Sheikh Salim Chishti is located within the vast royal complex of Fatehpur Sikri, a city founded by Akbar himself. Fatehpur Sikri lies approximately 40 kilometers west of Agra, in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. This city was not only built to commemorate Akbar’s victory in Gujarat in 1573 but also to celebrate the saint whose blessings changed the course of Mughal succession.
The shrine of Sheikh Salim Chishti is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture and a rare example of a structure built entirely in white marble during Akbar’s reign. It stands within the courtyard of the Jama Masjid at Fatehpur Sikri and is surrounded by red sandstone structures, making its dazzling marble exterior even more striking. The tomb is enclosed within intricately carved marble screens (jali work), and the cenotaph inside is draped in rich fabrics and showered with flowers and offerings by devotees. The actual grave of Sheikh Salim lies in a crypt beneath the main chamber.
This majestic shrine was built by Akbar himself as a token of his immense gratitude and love for the saint, and it remains a symbol of the deep relationship between spiritual authority and imperial power during the Mughal era. It is not only a spiritual center but also a historical and architectural landmark, drawing pilgrims from across India and tourists from around the world. People from all walks of life, irrespective of religion, visit the shrine to seek blessings, tie sacred threads, and offer prayers for their wishes to be fulfilled.
To this day, the dargah of Sheikh Salim Chishti remains a vibrant and sacred site of devotion, known for its spiritual aura, rich history, and exquisite Mughal craftsmanship—a lasting legacy of a saint who shaped both the spiritual and political landscape of his time.
With this, we seek your permission until tomorrow, tomorrow we will describe the biography of Salman Farsi and the history of his Shrine.
