The Colosseum

The Colosseum, located in the heart of Rome,is one of the most iconic and enduring symbols of the ancient Roman Empire,
Also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, it was commissioned around 70–72 AD by Emperor Vespasian and completed in 80 AD under his successor, Titus. Designed to host spectacular public events such as gladiator contests, animal hunts, and mock naval battles, the Colosseum could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators. Its architecture, including a complex system of vaults and underground chambers, showcased the engineering prowess of the Romans.
Despite suffering damage over the centuries from earthquakes, and time itself, the Colosseum remains a powerful reminder of Rome’s grandeur and is a major tourist attraction today, symbolizing both the glory and brutality of the ancient world,
stones from the Colosseum were repurposed in the construction of various buildings in Rome, including St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
