A’JAY gave birth to his son and transitioned years later. LJ aka Vari was 11 years old when his dad began transitioning. He told Truly: “He asked me how I feel about it, and I said, if you want to be my dad, you can be my dad because you're already dressed like a boy anyways.” A’Jay said the pair went through counselling to get a better understanding of what they were getting into. A’Jay said: “I definitely feel like I was waiting for permission from Vari just because I wanted to make sure he wasn't feeling uncomfortable with the surroundings.” Vari called A’Jay ‘mom’ when he was younger but started calling him ‘dad’ in middle school. He said that his dad’s transition has not made any difference to their relationship. A’Jay said: “I don't think that my transition has had any negative effects on him. I think it actually brought us together stronger.” He started sharing his story online and has been met with a lot of positivity but also a lot of disrespectful comments with people misgendering him and questioning the impact his transition has had on his son. Vari said: Whatever you do, don't let people judge you. Don't hide from what you want to do and just be yourself.”
