Ractopamine is a feed additive used in the American pork industry to increase muscle mass and reduce fat deposition in pigs. It is a beta-agonist drug that activates receptors on the surface of muscle cells, leading to increased protein deposition and faster fat removal. While approved for use in the US at specific levels and time periods, many international markets have banned or restricted its use, leading some U.S. packers to process only ractopamine-free pigs.
