JFK is a 1991 American epic political thriller film co-produced and directed by Oliver Stone based on a screenplay he wrote with Zachary Sklar. The film examines the investigation into the assassination of John F. Kennedy by New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison, who came to believe there was a conspiracy to assassinate Kennedy and that Lee Harvey Oswald was a scapegoat.

Stone and Sklar's script was adapted from the books On the Trail of the Assassins by Garrison and Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy by Jim Marrs. Stone described this account as a "counter-myth" to the Warren Commission's "fictional myth". JFK's embrace of conspiracy theories made it controversial.[2] Many major American newspapers ran editorials accusing Stone of spreading untruths, including the claim that Kennedy was killed as part of a coup d'état to install Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson in his place. The film stars an ensemble cast led by Kevin Costner as Garrison and consisting of Kevin Bacon, Tommy Lee Jones (in a dual role), Gary Oldman, Michael Rooker, Laurie Metcalf, Jay O. Sanders, Sissy Spacek, Wayne Knight, Joe Pesci, Frank Whaley, Ed Asner, John Candy, Bob Gunton, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Brian Doyle-Murray, Vincent D'Onofrio, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Ron Rifkin, Martin Sheen, Donald Sutherland, Dale Dye, and Garrison himself (in his final film role before his death in 1992).
