Massive power blackout in Spain, France and Portugal: causes investigated, hacker attack.

On 28 April 2025, starting at 12 noon, an electricity blackout affected millions of people throughout Spain, with the exception of the Canary and Balearic Islands, Portugal, and also parts of France. A large-scale hacker attack has happened. The blackouts caused paralysis of various essential services, infrastructure and production sectors, while the authorities investigate the causes of the outage and its possible impact.

Interruption of supply and immediate consequences

The blackout, which began at around 12 noon, had a widespread impact on the functioning of critical infrastructure, such as transport networks, communications, hospitals and airports. Despite the cuts, hospitals, which have back-up generators, suffered no interruption in care. In Spain, the Adif railway system experienced power failures, which caused the paralysis of rail traffic nationwide. Renfe informed via its social channels that, as of 12:30 p.m., there were no departures or movements at stations. In addition, major airports, such as Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat, suffered delays and flight restrictions due to the lack of electricity supply.

Authorities’ response and possible causes

Both the Spanish and Portuguese governments activated technical teams to investigate the origin of the blackouts. Although no official explanation has yet been given, several hypotheses have been considered, including the possibility of a cyber attack. The National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE) in Spain and the Portuguese authorities are analysing the situation, but no conclusions have yet been confirmed. The company Red Eléctrica, responsible for the management of the electricity network in Spain, informed that, as of 1pm, the restoration of power has begun in the north and south of the peninsula, allowing the gradual recovery of supply. According to a company statement, efforts to restore electricity include the ‘gradual commissioning’ of the transmission network as generators reconnect.
