Dekhti Aankhooon aur sountay kaanoon ko Asslamoalaikum, sisters, brothers friends and elders, in informative series videos of Islamic ascolars, sufisaints, cultural heritages, islamic philosophys, islamic mysticisms and historical figures. today we are describing biography of Ashraf Jahangir Semnani and the history of his shrine.
Sultan Makhdoom Ashraf Jahangir Semnani (1285–1386 CE) was a prominent Sufi saint and spiritual leader who originated from Semnan, Iran, and later settled in the Indian subcontinent. He was the founder of the Ashrafi Silsila, a spiritual branch that significantly influenced Indian Sufism. Born into royalty, his father, Sultan Ibrahim Noorbaksh, was the ruler of Semnan, while his mother, Bibi Khadija, was believed to be a descendant of the famous Turkic saint Ahmad Yasawi. Makhdoom Ashraf himself was claimed to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad through his grandson, Imam Husayn ibn Ali, which enhanced his religious and spiritual stature among both his followers and contemporary scholars.
Despite his royal background, Sultan Makhdoom Ashraf renounced worldly power at the young age of 23. He abdicated the throne of Semnan in favor of his spiritual journey, seeking divine truth and inner enlightenment. He traveled extensively in search of spiritual guidance, ultimately arriving in India where he became a disciple of the renowned Sufi saint Ala al-Haq Pandavi in Bengal. After completing his spiritual training, he eventually settled in Kichhauchha Sharif in the present-day district of Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was here that he spent the remainder of his life in prayer, teaching, and spreading the message of love, tolerance, and devotion to God. His teachings drew countless followers, and he became one of the most revered saints of the Indian subcontinent.
Sultan Makhdoom Ashraf Jahangir Semnani passed away in 1386 CE (787 AH) in Kichhauchha Sharif, where he had established his center for spiritual teaching and meditation. After his death, his followers and admirers built a grand shrine (dargah) at the place of his burial in Kichhauchha. This shrine became a major center of Sufi pilgrimage, attracting thousands of devotees from across India and beyond, regardless of caste, creed, or religion. The dargah of Makhdoom Ashraf is known for its spiritual aura and the peaceful ambiance that continues to attract seekers of all faiths.
The construction of the shrine was initiated by his close disciples and later supported and expanded by various rulers and noble families who revered him. Over centuries, successive Sufi custodians (sajjada nashins) and local patrons contributed to the maintenance and beautification of the dargah complex. The architecture of the shrine reflects Indo-Islamic influences and has undergone periodic renovations to preserve its historical and spiritual significance.
Today, the shrine of Makhdoom Ashraf in Kichhauchha Sharif is not only a place of pilgrimage but also a symbol of the universal Sufi message of love, unity, and devotion to God. His urs (death anniversary) is commemorated with great reverence, drawing devotees from around the world who come to pay homage to the saint whose teachings continue to inspire countless hearts on the path of spiritual realization.
With this, we seek your permission until tomorrow, tomorrow we will describe the biography of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and the history of his Shrine.
