A basic course on Beefheart 101: An introduction to Trout Mask Replica through the song "Frownland."

This is an edited re-issue of a video I originally did in December of 2022. It has mainly been revised to increase sound quality. It serves as an orientation to all those who have never heard Captain Beefheart or have heard him and hate what they heard.

The Captain is one of the most controversial musical artists of the 20th Century. Basically, if you have heard him, you either love him or hate him!

The song Frownland is the opening track off his double album masterpiece, "Trout Mask Replica" that came out in 1969. It is only 1 minute and 40 seconds long .but it packs a lot in. It is one of the most analyzed of the Captain's songs.

Note: My statement that Trout Mask Replica was the Captain's second "real" album has been disputed by some. Here is my thinking:

The 1971 album "Mirror Man," was actually recorded on 1967, but can be skipped over as it mainly consists of unfinished songs from an abandoned project released by Blue Thumb Records after the Captain had obtained some notoriety.

The 1968 album "Strictly Personal" came from the same sessions but was marred in production by the addition of a number of special effects which were not authorized by the Captain. Ant Man Bee has remixed the tracks from that album which makes for a significant improvement. They can be found here:
