The "Stalled" UAF Offensive in the Krasnoyaruzhsky District

Following the setback experienced near Sudzha, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) command initiated a new offensive initiative in the neighboring Belgorod Oblast's Krasnoyaruzhsky District. However, the UAF's offensive capabilities in this area were effectively neutralized on the approaches to the first border settlements, where intense counterbattles persist to the present day.

The following is a detailed chronology of the fighting in the sector.

By mid-April, the entire area of Popovka had become a continuous "gray zone," where Ukrainian formations attempted to maintain control over at least part of the village. Concurrently, the UAF established a stronghold in the western sector of Sukha Balka, in proximity to the neighboring Demidovka, thereby substantially mitigating the intensity of attacks on Russian positions.

At intermittent intervals, the opposing force endeavored to redeploy reserves from the Miropolya area, thereby pursuing the objective of infiltrating the Krasnoyaruzhsky District in small groups. These endeavors have resulted in substantial losses for the UAF, including personnel and equipment. Russian drone operators and artillerymen frequently engaged the enemy while they were still advancing, within the borders of Sumy Oblast.

It is noteworthy that the majority of counterattacks executed by Ukrainian formations involved the utilization of infantry units, thereby minimizing the employment of armored vehicles. This is primarily attributable to the high operational tempo of Russian Armed Forces drones and the challenging topography: there are few passageways through the so-called "dragon's teeth," and armored vehicles encounter significant challenges traversing the swampy balkas (ravines).

At present, the primary focus of Ukrainian military formations is the fortification of their occupied positions in the vicinity of Maryino, with a concomitant emphasis on maintaining control over these areas.

It is imperative to acknowledge that the liberation of Russian territory in Belgorod Oblast will have a media impact that is no less significant for both parties than the successes of the Russian Armed Forces in the neighboring Sumy direction.

Consequently, Ukrainian formations will persist in the exchange of personnel for days of maintaining at least some Russian territory under their control. New attempts to breach the border in adjacent districts cannot be ruled out, as for Kyiv, personnel are cheaper than bold headlines.
