Giant Swallowtail Butterfly 2025

Here’s video of a new Spring 2025 butterfly I just captured on video. This is the first time I’ve seen one of these here in the wild. It is a Giant Swallowtail Butterfly.

The largest butterfly on North America is reportedly the Giant Swallowtail, which is native to several regions of the continent. They have black wings with a yellow horizontal band across the forewings when the wings are open. Alongside the black & yellow coloring, patches of crimson and blue stripes are visible when wings are closed. In females, the yellow bands have a thinner texture, and the yellow oval band at the third position from the tip of the wing has a black spot on it. In males, the oval has a thicker golden belt and no black spot.
