NEUKAM: “The — the popularity of the party on Capitol Hill is probably at the lowest point that it’s been in your congressional career. You’ve been in the House before the Senate. There’s a lot of theories going on around you know why Democrats lost in ‘24, ‘24 has been well litigated, but it seems like the popularity is continue to decline as the first four months of this Congress have going on. What’s your diagnosis for — for why the party is viewed so unpopularly right now?”
VAN HOLLEN: “So you’re right. We have only up to go, that’s — that’s good news. And so look, I think there are two things. One is, I think Americans regardless of political party want people who are going to fight for the things they believe in. I think they are tired of people who have sort of their — their fingers in the wind to try to figure out where to go. I think we need to you know, fight this lawless president all fronts, but I also think we need to provide an alternative vision for the country. And I think there’s an opportunity to do that especially as we come upon the Republican plan to provide a big tax cut for very rich and wealthy people and big corporations at the expense of everybody else in America. So my view is in addition to fighting that we should have some alternative, and I’m — I’m working right now to present that kind of alternative.”
