Assessing Liver Function

While not specific for measuring the degree of liver fat, ALT is reasonably sensitive and specific. If it is over 20 and you have other signs, it should be investigated further.

You also want to get an AST. This measures mitochondrial function. AST rises in the presence of infection, toxins, alcohol, and acetaminophen, to name a few.

Adding a GGT to the lab order will add more information when assessing liver dysfunction.
