What we have today are a group of so-called psuedo-scientific activities (which may contain some truth) and a neurologically centered subject that pooh-poohs some of the more profound experiences, which include those that can be dangerous, and those also that might be healing or reaffirming to spiritual or religious beliefs. We probably need a better understanding of the history of what is somewhat misleadingly called "cognitive dissonance", along with topics like hypnosis and NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming). Familiarity with these topics is crucial for one to get an idea of the way the public has been restricted (and possibly also shielded) from mental and spiritual qualities that are in fact empirically knowable.
