Danielle Smith says Alberta won't accept Ottawa's "unconstitutional" net-zero regulations

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced on Thursday that Alberta's government is contesting the constitutionality of federal clean electricity regulations in the province's Court of Appeal.

"Alberta will no longer tolerate having our livelihoods threatened, our industries targeted and our resources landlocked by Ottawa," Smith said.

These regulations, introduced by Ottawa in 2024 and aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2035 impose strict carbon limits on fossil fuel power. The federal government has since pushed back that target to 2050. The Alberta government argues that these targets are unattainable and will significantly increase electricity costs for residents.

"Our government will not blindly accept unconstitutional net-zero regulations that put Albertans in harm's way. We will always stand up and fight for our province and we will not let Albertans freeze in the dark," she said.
