On Thursday, Waltz's Assistant National Security Advisor, Alex Wong, also stepped down.

Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, "I am announcing that I am nominating Mike Waltz as the next US Ambassador to the United Nations. Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our national interests above all else. I know he will do the same in his new role."

Regarding Rubio, Trump said that he will serve as the National Security Advisor while also carrying out the duties of the country's top diplomat.

The US President said, "Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to make America and the world safe again."

With this change, he has made the first major change in his administration since taking office for his second term.

Earlier, news reports indicated that Trump forced Waltz to resign due to a deteriorating relationship between them.

It is believed that he added a journalist to a confidential chat on the Signal app related to US attacks in Yemen. This was a serious breach of US national security. At that time, Trump publicly supported Waltz.

However, changing National Security Advisors is not new for Trump. During his first term, he appointed four National Security Advisors in four years. Even retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn served for only four weeks.

Waltz is a former US Congressman. He represented Florida's sixth district from 2019. He was re-elected to his seat in 2024. He resigned from Congress in January to join the Trump administration.

Prior to that, he served in the US Army as a member of the Special Forces branch, Green Berets.

US Vice President JD Vance, however, stated that Mike Waltz has been promoted by being appointed as the US Ambassador to the United Nations. He also condemned media reports that he was dismissed from the position of National Security Advisor
