Title: "Σιγησάτω πᾶσα σάρξ" (Let all mortal flesh be silent)

During the Divine Liturgy on the morning of the Holy and Great Friday, which commemorates the Descent of the Lord into Hades and the salvation of the dead, this special hymn takes the place of the Cherubic Hymn, chanted normally during the Great Entrance.

Σιγησάτω πᾶσα σάρξ βροτεία
καὶ στήτω μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου,
καὶ μηδὲν γήινον ἐν ἑαυτῇ λογιζέσθω·
ὁ γὰρ Βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων
καὶ Κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων,
προσέρχεται σφαγιασθῆναι
καὶ δοθῆναι εἰς βρῶσιν τοῖς πιστοῖς·
προηγοῦνται δὲ τούτου οἱ χοροὶ τῶν ἀγγέλων
μετὰ πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας, τ
ὰ πολυόμματα Χερουβείμ,
καὶ τὰ ἑξαπτέρυγα Σεραφεὶμ
τὰς ὄψεις καλύπτοντα,
καὶ βοῶντα τὸν ὕμνον:
Αλληλούïα.

English:

Let all mortal flesh be silent,
and stand with fear and terror;
and let it ponder nothing earthly-minded;
For the King of kings,
and the Lord of lords,
comes forth to be slaughtered
and given to the faithful as heavenly feast.
The hosts of Angels precede Him;
the Principalities and the Authorities;
the many-eyed Cherubim
and the six-winged Seraphim,
veiling their faces, and crying the hymn:
Alleluia
