Medical Breakthrough Report:
Yes, Fox News recently reported on a medical breakthrough for colorectal cancer. On April 28, 2025, they published an article highlighting a “groundbreaking” clinical trial by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) testing a non-invasive immunotherapy treatment. The therapy, using the drug dostarlimab (Jemperli), was shown to reduce or eliminate tumors in patients with rectal cancer without the need for chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation. In the initial trial, which began with 18 patients in 2022, all participants with mismatch repair-deficient (MMRd) or microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) rectal cancer showed no evidence of cancer after treatment, and some remain cancer-free years later. A follow-up study with 49 patients reported similar results, with 49/49 showing no evidence of cancer post-treatment. This immunotherapy “unmasks” tumor cells, enabling the patient’s immune system to recognize and destroy them, offering a potential alternative for a subset of colorectal cancer patients, particularly those with MMRd/MSI-H tumors (about 5-10% of cases). The article emphasized the therapy’s potential to transform treatment by avoiding life-altering side effects of traditional methods.
