(If you have bought into Trump's idea that high tariffs will magically bring a lot of manufacturing back to the US & improve our standard of living, you really need to listen to this knowledgeable discussion. When Apple tried to shift some of their manufacturing to India, they still needed to purchase equipment from China that wasn't available in the West. When the TSMC semiconductor foundry in Taiwan was required to establish some manufacturing in the US, they had to bring a large percentage of staff just to become operational, because there weren't enough qualified people in the US. Intel's revenue has decreased significantly in recent years. With high tariffs, Trump has already damaged relationships with China & many others. Contrary to what Trump thinks, China can survive without the US market & continue to grow. BUT the US doesn't have adequate alternate suppliers outside of China for many products we rely on in our daily lives. To make matters worse, it would take many years to build manufacturing here with the necessary supply chains for many of these important products. We have also lost our manufacturing expertise & skilled engineers in many of these areas. None of this is easy to fix quickly. China is prepared for decoupling from the US, but the US isn't prepared to decouple from China.
