In the late 1930s in Germany, just before World War II started, a pharmaceutical company named Temmler Werke was working on a new drug. In 1937, they released a little white pill called Pervitin. It looked harmless, just a small tablet you could buy at the pharmacy without a prescription. But inside that pill was something really powerful. It was methamphetamine hydrochloride. Basically, it was crystal meth, but legal.
