The area was once proposed as a “black kingdom” south of the uMkhomazi River in 1851 by Theophilus Shepstone.

The river’s silting has historically prevented harbor development, preserving the area’s natural beauty.
Surrounding Areas: Umkomaas is part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, with nearby suburbs like Widenham, Saiccor Village, and Clansthal, and towns like Scottburgh and Amanzimtoti along the Sapphire and uMdoni Coasts. The N2 highway provides easy access, with Durban 45 minutes away.
