Constantine the Great Tells His Story and Conversion to Christianity and How He Changed Rome

I, Emperor Constantine the Great, was born in the city of Naissus, located in the province of Moesia (modern-day Serbia), around AD 272. From an early age, I showed great promise and ambition, eventually rising to prominence within the Roman military.

One of the defining moments of my life occurred in AD 312, on the eve of the Battle of Milvian Bridge. It was there, on the banks of the Tiber River, that I experienced a vision of a cross in the sky with the words "In hoc signo vinces" ("In this sign, you shall conquer"). Inspired by this vision, I adopted the Christian faith and ordered my soldiers to emblazon their shields with the symbol of the Chi-Rho, a monogram of the first two letters of Christ's name in Greek.

Miraculously, we emerged victorious in the Battle of Milvian Bridge, securing my claim to the throne as the sole emperor of the Roman Empire. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of my efforts to promote Christianity and establish it as the official religion of the empire.

In AD 313, I issued the Edict of Milan, granting religious tolerance to Christians and officially recognizing Christianity as a legitimate religion within the empire. This marked a significant departure from the persecution of Christians that had characterized previous reigns and paved the way for the eventual adoption of Christianity as the state religion.

Throughout my reign, I embarked on numerous reforms aimed at strengthening the empire and consolidating my power. I moved the capital of the empire from Rome to Byzantium, which I renamed Constantinople in my honor. This strategic relocation helped to secure the eastern provinces of the empire and ensure its continued stability and prosperity.

I also convened the First Council of Nicaea in AD 325, which aimed to address theological disputes within the Christian church and establish a unified doctrine. The council produced the Nicene Creed, which remains a foundational statement of Christian belief to this day.

Though my reign was not without its challenges, including conflicts with rival claimants to the throne and barbarian invasions, I am remembered as one of the most influential figures in world history. My conversion to Christianity and the subsequent adoption of the faith by the Roman Empire had a profound and lasting impact on the course of Western civilization, shaping the religious, cultural, and political landscape of Europe for centuries to come.
