CLINT CURTIS APPOINTED ROV IN SHASTA COUNTY
Elections remain a contentious issue in Shasta County. Kevin Crye’s election gave citizens skeptical of voting machines a 3-2 majority on the Shasta County Board of Supervisors. The board passed an ordinance to eliminate Dominion tabulators and return to hand-counting ballots. However, the Registrar of Voters (ROV), who supported machine counting, lobbied in Sacramento, leading to the passage of AB969. This law prohibited hand-counting in counties with over 1,000 residents, forcing Shasta County to comply. Unwilling to use Dominion systems, the board opted for Hart tabulators.
In early 2024, the ROV resigned due to health issues, and a temporary ROV was appointed. Many citizens felt the new ROV lacked transparency, restricting election observers’ access during the subsequent election. Following complaints and health concerns, this ROV also resigned. Clint Curtis, a Florida-based Democratic lawyer and critic of voting machines, is a favored candidate among machine skeptics. Previously not selected in the 2024 appointment, Curtis was reconsidered for the role. With the next election months away, Supervisor Crye believed Curtis’s appointment offered enough time to reform and train election staff, avoiding potential state intervention by the California Secretary of State.
Shasta County is a heavy Republican county; however in the first appointment attempt, Supervisor Crye manuvered to not pick Curtis, mainly due to his association with Mike Lindell, a Trump ally and MyPillow CEO, At that time and due to fear of strong opposition by some citizens, and being too close to a coming election, quite possibly could have caused the California Secratary of State to intervien and take control of the county election process. Crye and two Supervisors selected Tom Toller, a retired Lawyer, to take the possition. However Toller resigned early enough where the second appointment will have ample time for Curtis to make changes and train staff.
Curtis acknowledges the requirement to use Hart tabulators but plans to implement high-speed HD cameras to capture clear ballot images before tabulation, ensuring voter anonymity. This approach aims to verify the accuracy of Hart tabulators and provide a transparent method to audit election results, ultimately restoring public trust in the process.
