AMERICAN WORLD WAR 1 FIGHTER PILOT

Eddie Rickenbacker, America’s premier World War I fighter pilot, was born in 1890 in Columbus, Ohio. A self-taught mechanic and racecar driver, he transitioned to aviation, joining the 94th Aero Squadron in 1917. Flying Nieuport 28s and later SPAD XIII fighters, Rickenbacker quickly distinguished himself, achieving 26 confirmed aerial victories, the highest of any American pilot in the war. His daring tactics and leadership earned him the Medal of Honor in 1930 for single-handedly attacking seven enemy planes, downing two. Known for his resilience, he survived multiple close calls, including a crash landing behind enemy lines. Rickenbacker’s exploits made him a national hero, and his memoir, Fighting the Flying Circus, vividly recounts his dogfights. After the war, he became a successful businessman, leading Eastern Air Lines. His legacy endures as a symbol of courage and skill in early military aviation.
