June 4, 1965 - President Johnson delivered the commencement address today at Howard University, the nation’s most prominent Negro university, in Washington, D.C.
An audience of about 5,000, including the seniors, sat outdoors in the university’s main quadrangle to hear Johnson, who spoke from a temporary platform in front of a building named for Frederick Douglass, the 19th century Negro leader.
At the conclusion of his remarks, the Howard University choir sang “We Shall Overcome.”
