The real dire wolf (*Aenocyon dirus*) is back in the spotlight—not because of Westeros, but thanks to groundbreaking research. In 2021, genetic analysis of fossil DNA proved dire wolves weren’t just oversized gray wolves—they belonged to a completely separate genus that diverged over 5.7 million years ago. This means Aenocyon couldn’t even interbreed with modern wolves. In 2024, scientists successfully reconstructed large parts of the dire wolf genome, giving us the clearest picture yet of this Ice Age apex predator. Fossils from La Brea to Peru show they dominated for thousands of years until climate shifts and prey loss led to extinction around 10,000 years ago.
