A Moment of Prayer and Purpose as the Church Faces Global Challenges
On a warm Monday afternoon, 170 Cardinals, including 132 electors, gathered for the eleventh General Congregation on May 5, 2025. The meeting kicked off with a heartfelt moment of prayer, setting the tone for a day filled with meaningful dialogue.

According to Matteo Bruni, the director of the Holy See Press Office, the atmosphere was charged with passion and purpose as around 20 Cardinals shared their thoughts on a variety of pressing issues. They tackled topics that resonate deeply within both the Church and our wider society, like the challenges of ethnocentrism and the enriching presence of migrants. Many emphasized how supporting the faith of migrants can strengthen our communities.

The discussions also shed light on the ongoing wars and conflicts affecting many, particularly in Asia and Africa, where several Cardinals shared their perspectives based on their experiences. They explored the Synod on Synodality, emphasizing the importance of communion within the Church.

A significant part of the conversation revolved around the Cardinals' commitment to support the new Pope, envisioning a pastoral leader who thrives on dialogue and fosters relationships across diverse cultures and religions. They also addressed the growing challenge posed by sects, highlighting the need for unity and understanding.

The day wrapped up at 7:00 PM, but the dialogue continues as the twelfth General Congregation is set to kick off bright and early on Tuesday, May 6, at 9:00 AM. It’s a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility we all have in nurturing faith and connection in a world that often feels divided.
