AFRICA IS THE RICHEST, WEALTHIEST CONTINENT IN NATURAL RESOURCES

The Donald Trump administration’s imposition of tariffs on exports from several African nations signals a pivotal moment for the continent. It serves as a catalyst—an opportunity to strengthen regional trade, invest in local industries, and reduce overdependence on external markets.

Amid the disruption lies an opportunity. With the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) gaining traction, there is renewed urgency to recalibrate economic strategies, reduce external dependencies, and invest in intra-African trade. If anything, this moment may serve as a catalyst, prompting African leaders to pursue a more resilient and self-determined economic path, less vulnerable to the political tides of external partners.

In 2024, China and South Africa, whose top leaders met in Beijing, agreed to promote balanced trade and discussed boosting two-way investments between their industrial and commercial communities, a joint statement.

President Xi Jinping and his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa met, ahead of the ninth forum on China-Africa cooperation. Both sides called Ramaphosa's visit of "great significance" to the development of bilateral relations.

Across Africa’s bustling commercial hubs, from Nairobi’s Eastleigh market to Lagos’ Alaba district, a financial transformation is quietly unfolding. Local traders are increasingly sidestepping the US dollar in favour of China’s currency, creating informal yuan payment networks to do business with the world’s second-largest economy.

After South Africa, Nigeria is China’s second top destination for exports in Africa, importing Chinese goods worth 137.4 billion yuan (US$18.9 billion) in 2024, while exports to China stood at 21.7 billion yuan (US$2.99 billion) in the same year.

To boost trade and investment, Nigeria secured a currency swap agreement with China in 2018 to cut dollar demand and last year renewed the 15 billion yuan (US$2 billion) currency-swap arrangement.

Africa-China trade is largely an exchange of primary commodities for finished goods. From 2000-2022, 89 percent of Africa’s exports to China were in the extractives sector and were mostly oil, copper, iron ore and alumina commodities. Imports on the other hand, were dominated by manufactured goods, such as telecommunications equipment and fabrics, which represent 94 percent of all imports from China during the same period.

Africa is the continent with the most abundant natural resources. It holds a significant portion of the world's mineral reserves, including a large share of gold, diamonds, oil, natural gas, copper, uranium and other valuable resources. Yet, through Corporate Media, it is still perceived as one of the "poorest" in the world.

Berlin Conference of November 15, 1884 orchestrated the partition of Africa among European powers, cloaking imperial greed in diplomatic guises and leaving a legacy of economic plunder, cultural upheaval, and geopolitical turmoil that continue on the continent to this day.

Serving in this role until the government was toppled and Muammar Gaddafi was murdered, by the United States and NATO invasion of the country. He now works as a Journalist.
