Homemade Carpenter Bee Trap - 10 May 2022

If you have Carpenter Bees do not mistakenly think they are doing very little damage - just cutting 3/8" holes here and there. Actually they cut in then turn and tunnel - then each year make those tunnels longer. They are doing a LOT more damage than meets the eye. So get busy and trap them. Catch one in your trap jar to get the correct scent in the trap. And then go fill up the holes and tunnels they have made. This past year we filled the holes and tunnels with Liquid Nails construction adhesive. I wish I could find Plastic Wood or something like that in a caulk gun tube - I would use that to fill the holes.

Making the trap is simple. Use a 4" x 4" or 6" x 6" or even a shortened piece of small firewood - drill a 1" center hole but do NOT go out the top. Then drill 7/16" holes from each side going up at about a 45 degree angle to connect to the 1" center hole. Drill a 1" hole in the center of your clear plastic jar lid and attach that lid to the bottom of the wood so the hole in the lid is lined up with the hole in the wood. Catch one carpenter bee in the jar and screw the jar onto your trap. Hang the trap where you see carpenter bees looking for old holes to extend OR making new ones. And yes make your trap's holes much more attractive by filling up ALL the old and new carpenter bees holes you find.

While Carpenter Bees look somewhat like Bumble Bees they are NOT the same species. The "just awakening from hibernation" females of both species are looking for nesting sites generally beginning in May here in Southern Michigan. Bumble Bees nest in leaf and grass litter - so they are looking for that flying close over the ground. The destructive to wooden structures Carpenter Bees are instead looking for wood of their preferred density which they then tunnel into and weaken considerably over time. If you value your wooden structure you need to deny the Carpenter Bees time to tunnel in and weaken it.

Remember to intentionally, on purpose, learn of God each day by prayerfully reading, studying, and pondering upon God's word each day. Talk to God in prayer as your Heavenly Father who would like for you to be His friend. Find out what He would like you to do for Him as His friend and go and do it for Him as His friend.
