Biography of Badi al-Din and the history of his shrine
Dekhti Aankhooon aur sountay kaanoon ko Asslamoalaikum, sisters, brothers friends and elders, in informative series videos of Islamic ascolars, sufisaints, cultural heritages, islamic philosophys, islamic mysticisms and historical figures. today we are describing biography of Badi al-Din and the history of his shrine.
Badi al-Din, more famously known as Shah Madar or by his spiritual title *Qutb al-Madar*, was a distinguished 14th-century Syrian Sufi who left a profound and lasting mark on the spiritual landscape of India. Born in 1315 in Aleppo, Syria, he was deeply rooted in Islamic scholarship and mysticism from an early age. He eventually embarked on a spiritual journey that led him across the Islamic world, including regions like Mecca, Baghdad, and Central Asia, before finally settling in the Indian subcontinent. It was in India that he founded the *Madariyya* Sufi order, a brotherhood that emphasized spiritual devotion, asceticism, and service to humanity. Shah Madar’s teachings resonated with the masses, and he soon came to be regarded not only as a revered Sufi saint but also as a spiritual guide for thousands, cutting across religious, social, and ethnic boundaries.
Shah Madar lived a long life by historical standards, and it is believed that he passed away in the year 1434 CE. His death marked the conclusion of an extraordinary life spent in the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment, interfaith harmony, and the dissemination of divine love. The date of his death is commemorated each year during the annual *Urs* (death anniversary celebration), which draws pilgrims from across India and beyond, especially those who follow the traditions of the Madariyya order.
The final resting place of Shah Madar is in Makanpur Sharif, a town located in the Kanpur Dehat district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. His shrine, known as *Dargah Qutb al-Madar*, has become one of the most important Sufi pilgrimage centers in North India. The town of Makanpur transformed over the centuries into a significant spiritual hub due to Shah Madar’s presence and the sanctity of his shrine. Pilgrims, regardless of caste, creed, or religious background, flock to Makanpur to pay their respects and seek blessings from the saint who is widely regarded as a *wali* (friend of God) and a spiritual *qutb* (pole or axis of divine energy).
The construction of Shah Madar’s shrine is traditionally attributed to the devotion and efforts of his followers, most notably those who were early disciples and custodians of the Madariyya order. While there is no definitive historical record identifying a specific ruler or builder in the way that Mughal emperors commissioned tombs for saints and royals, it is well-acknowledged that the shrine was originally constructed and expanded by his spiritual successors. Over time, rulers and local patrons, particularly from the Sultanate and later Mughal periods, contributed to the upkeep and expansion of the complex due to the widespread veneration of Shah Madar and the influence of the Madariyya Sufi order.
The architectural features of the dargah reflect a blend of Indo-Islamic design, characterized by domes, arches, and intricate carvings that are common to Sufi shrines across the Indian subcontinent. The central tomb, believed to house the mortal remains of Shah Madar, is surrounded by an open courtyard, ancillary rooms for prayer and meditation, and accommodations for pilgrims. The shrine complex is a place of peace, spiritual gatherings, and communal meals, especially during the Urs, when thousands of devotees gather for qawwali, prayer, and celebration of Shah Madar’s life and teachings.
The *Madariyya* order, which Shah Madar founded, became one of the most widespread Sufi movements in India, especially among the rural and working-class communities. His message of divine love, equality, and non-violence struck a chord with people from all walks of life. The order was known for its simplicity, use of devotional music, and its emphasis on direct connection with the Divine without rigid hierarchies. Shah Madar's spiritual legacy continued to thrive through his numerous disciples who spread his teachings across different parts of India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal, and Maharashtra.
Even today, Shah Madar’s shrine at Makanpur remains a symbol of religious tolerance and spiritual unity. It attracts not only Muslims but also Hindus, Sikhs, and people of various backgrounds who come seeking blessings and spiritual solace. The annual Urs is a spectacular event filled with devotional music, Sufi rituals, and the timeless message of unity in divine love. The shrine is currently maintained by the custodians of the Madariyya lineage, known as *sajjada-nashins*, who continue the saint’s tradition of spiritual guidance and community service.
In conclusion, Shah Madar, also known as Badi al-Din, passed away in 1434 and is buried in Makanpur Sharif, Uttar Pradesh, where his shrine stands as a beacon of Sufi spirituality. Built and maintained by his devoted disciples and later supported by regional rulers and common people alike, the dargah is not just a tomb but a living institution that continues to inspire and unite seekers of all faiths. His legacy, embodied in the Madariyya order and the devotion of his followers, remains a vibrant thread in the spiritual fabric of India.
With this, we seek your permission until tomorrow, tomorrow we will describe the biography of Shah Yousuf Gardez and the history of his Shrine.
