Trane Precedent Economizer Mini Rant

People often complain about Trane economizers but don’t realize the installer never set them up properly. This is very common among this style and the more common “pop-out” type economizer. If the mist eliminator (outside air filter) isn’t fitting properly or the barometric relief isn’t lining up, chances are good that you need to review the IOM and adjust what you’re doing in the field. Of course if you notice damage to the equipment, that can contribute to the misalignment. If you have a horizontal return (not downflow), ensure all dampers and linkages are in place and connected. Route thermostat wires through factory provided locations. Make sure barometric exhaust dampers open freely to the outside. Verify power exhaust motors and dampers work per design and are wired correctly.
