On May 7, 2025, India launched a series of air and missile strikes on multiple cities in Pakistan and in the Pakistan-administered region of Kashmir, under the operation named "Sindoor." According to the Indian government, these strikes were a response to the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian Kashmir, where 26 civilians—mostly Hindu tourists—were killed in an attack attributed to militants from the group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

India stated that the strikes targeted terrorist infrastructure at nine locations, including Bahawalpur, Muridke, Muzaffarabad, and Kotli, allegedly linked to the groups Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. The Indian government emphasized that it deliberately avoided striking Pakistani military installations in order to limit the escalation of the conflict.

Pakistan reported that the Indian attacks killed at least 26 civilians, including women and children, and injured more than 46 others. The Pakistani government denounced India’s actions as “cowardly” and vowed an appropriate response, claiming it had shot down five Indian fighter jets in retaliation.
