An electret is a dielectric material that has a quasi-permanent electric charge or dipole polarization, functioning similarly to a magnet but with electric fields instead of magnetic ones. It is made by melting a dielectric material—such as a polymer or wax—embedding it with electric charges or aligning dipoles within it, and then cooling it to freeze the alignment or charges in place. Electrets are used in various applications such as microphones, electrostatic air filters, and sensors, where a stable internal electric field is needed. Their ability to maintain this electric field over long periods makes them particularly valuable in low-power electronic devices.
