Timothy Ferguson moved in with his biological mother Shanda Vander Ark in North Shores Michigan in 2021 after not being in her care since 2012. On July 6, 2022 Timothy was found dead of malnourishment and hypothermia in the basement of his home. Shanda and her adult son Paul Ferguson were charged with his murder. The boy weighed 69 pounds at the time of his death.

Fifteen year old Timothy Ferguson fell victim to shocking maltreatment from his own mother, Shanda Vander Ark, and his elder sibling, Paul Ferguson. The teenager, who had special needs, endured brutal torture that included being forced to consume bread soaked in hot sauce and enduring prolonged ice-cold baths.
