I test drove a new 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner in the burnt orange color Juan described. The test drive car had 4 speed manual shifter on the floor.

I was used to manual shifting transmissions but never with an engine with well over 400 horsepower.

I was with a young woman my age, having only met her earlier in the evening. I thought to impress her with my street smarts driving abilities.

Traffic was going less than 35 miles per hour so I slowed to 25 to make my point.

In what I thought would be enough space, I put gas pedal to the floor. The transmission was in first gear.

When the six doors of the carburetor were thrown open, all six of them dumping as much raw gasoline down the manifold of the hungry eight cylinders.

The back wheels torqued in a single action 4-11 gear ratio axle. That car!
When I shifted it from first gear to second while synchronizing the clutch and the gas pedal. The back wheels began screech.

The front wheels jump up off the pavement by a few inches; at least.

Any number of emergencies could have occurred in those few spilts seconds.

I was genuinely surprised at how much power the vehicle had. I knew I would kill myself in it. I loved vehicular power, but I knew I didn’t respect it.

Looking back I looked pretty wise for Eighteen years of age. So I won’t tell you what else I did later that year. So as to not blow any mystical ideas you may have of me.

The girl? Never saw her again. Don’t even remember her name any longer. Probably just as well; for her sake that I never saw her again. I had trouble written all over me.
