The invention of the first MEMS device is credited to Harvey Nathanson and Robert Wickstrom in 1965, at Westinghouse Research Laboratories. This device, a silicon cantilever, was used as a radio-frequency tuner. The term "MEMS" was introduced in 1986 by S.C. Jacobsen and J.E. Wood in a proposal to DARPA. While the core technologies were in development since the mid-1960s, MEMS applications became widespread in the 1990s and have continued to grow since then.

Bio-MEMS, or biomedical microelectromechanical systems, are micro-scale devices designed for biomedical applications, often involving microfluidics and other microfabrication techniques. They have significant overlap with lab-on-a-chip (LOC) technology and micro-total analysis systems (uTAS). Bio-MEMS devices are used for a variety of purposes, including drug delivery, biosensing, and manipulating individual cells.

PhysioNet is a resource under the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), specifically the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It serves as a platform for sharing and exchanging biomedical signals and open-source software for analyzing them, promoting research and education in the field. The Resource's goal is to stimulate research and investigations into complex biomedical and physiologic signals.
Biosignals are measurable physiological signals produced by living organisms, providing information about their health, emotions, and physical performance. These signals, which can be electrical, mechanical, or chemical, offer a way to understand and interact with the body's internal workings. Examples include heart rate, brainwaves, and muscle activity

An intra-body network is a communication system that utilizes the human body as a transmission medium to connect sensors or other devices within the body, enabling data exchange and monitoring. It's essentially a way to create a network inside the body, allowing for the transfer of information between different components.
