A dark comedy directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin, in a sharp departure from his iconic Tramp character. The film tells the story of Henri Verdoux, a former bank clerk who turns to marrying and murdering wealthy widows in order to support his family during the Great Depression. Inspired by the real-life French serial killer Henri Landru, the film is a biting satire on capitalism and moral hypocrisy. Verdoux sees himself as a businessman who kills on a small scale, while society wages war and kills on a massive one. With its blend of wit, charm, and chilling cynicism, Monsieur Verdoux was controversial upon release but later came to be recognized as one of Chaplin’s most daring and intellectually provocative works.
