To Be or Not to Be (1942)

Directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Jack Benny and Carole Lombard. Set in Nazi-occupied Warsaw during World War II, the film follows a troupe of Polish actors who become entangled in espionage and resistance efforts. When a spy threatens to expose members of the Polish underground, the actors use their theatrical skills—including impersonations and elaborate disguises—to outwit the Gestapo. Blending comedy with political commentary, the film critiques authoritarianism while celebrating the power of performance and courage under oppression. It is especially noted for its daring humor and Lubitsch’s sophisticated direction, as well as being Carole Lombard’s final film before her untimely death.
