The U.S. is cutting $50 million in health aid to Zambia over widespread theft of donated medical supplies, with U.S. officials accusing the government of failing to act despite repeated warnings.

An investigation found that over 2,000 pharmacies were selling stolen drugs meant to be distributed for free, including U.S.-donated HIV, malaria, and TB medications.

The aid cut, effective January next year, follows years of frustration, with the U.S. saying it can no longer support corrupt systems, the BBC has reported.

Zambia’s health minister acknowledged the issue but said steps are being taken to improve drug tracking and ensure supply.
