Mud-Crushing : Sailors at the Siege of Antwerp during the First World War

The First World War was mainly a land war, but that did not stop the Royal Navy from carving out its place on the front lines. When Britain entered the war to help Belgium it sent all of its army to fight in France instead. The Royal Navy had a large reserve of men who had expected to fight on ships, with comfortable hammocks and a daily ration of rum. Instead, they were sent to fight in the Siege of Antwerp.
