"You’re Just a Tenant of the Government": DeSantis Calls for End to Property Tax

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sparked major debate this week after publicly declaring that property taxes should be abolished, arguing that “no one can truly own their home if they must keep paying the state just to stay in it.”

In a speech that quickly went viral among conservative and patriotic circles across the country, DeSantis made his position crystal clear:

“You shouldn’t have to keep paying money just to live in your own house. If you’ve been in your home for 35 years and still have to pay property taxes, then you don’t own it — the government does.”

A Cry for Economic Freedom
For millions of Americans struggling under constant tax burdens, DeSantis’ words struck a powerful chord. At a time when living costs are skyrocketing, mortgages are crushing, and wages are stagnant, property taxes have become a chain keeping families from ever truly getting ahead.

“When you go to Best Buy and buy a flat screen TV, you pay a sales tax at the point of sale. You don’t keep paying a tax on that TV every single year,” DeSantis explained. “But if you buy a home with your hard-earned money, the government keeps taxing you for it every year, forever. That’s not freedom. That’s abuse.”

Backed by the Founding Fathers
DeSantis rooted his argument in American history, referencing Alexander Hamilton and the founding debates over the U.S. Constitution. He reminded the public that our Founders strongly opposed direct taxation, like the kind imposed on property.

“Hamilton wrote that indirect taxes are the fairest because they let the individual decide how much to pay, based on how much they consume. But with property taxes, there’s no choice. You’re just hammering families again and again with no way out,” DeSantis said.

A Betrayal of Private Ownership
The governor went further, calling the current property tax system a betrayal of private property rights.

“How can you talk about personal freedom if the government can take your home because you didn’t pay its yearly ‘rent’? That’s not ownership. That’s modern-day servitude.”

He continued:

“The Constitution was written to limit government power — not to give it the authority to take what you already paid for. This system is broken and needs to go.”

Middle-Class Families Under Siege
DeSantis also warned about the burden these taxes place on working families. In today’s housing market, the average Florida family is handed a property tax bill that eats up a large chunk of their annual income. “The math just doesn’t add up,” he said.

For many conservatives and everyday Americans watching their savings disappear into government coffers, DeSantis isn’t just making sense — he’s saying what others are too afraid to say out loud.

Trump, DeSantis, and the Future of Tax Freedom
Under the renewed presidency of Donald J. Trump, where the mission is clear — shrink government and return power to the people — DeSantis’ comments feel like the start of a national awakening. One that seeks to break the chains of taxation imposed by decades of bloated government.

Ending property taxes isn’t just a radical idea. It’s a deeply American one.
