The Mäusebunker was primarily used for biomedical and pharmaceutical research, housing thousands of mice and other small animals for experiments focused on immunology, virology, toxicology, and organ transplantation.

Researchers at the Free University of Berlin conducted studies on disease progression, drug efficacy, and surgical procedures, often involving invasive methods to model human conditions in animals.

The facility’s design included high-containment labs and isolated animal housing to support controlled infection studies and long-term physiological monitoring.

Over time, ethical concerns about animal welfare, combined with the facility’s aging infrastructure and limited adaptability to modern research standards, led to its closure in 2010.
