VE Day 80 Parade: Fall asleep in front of the box while the Household Cavalry and the Kinks (and horse droppings) do the show
It can happen, but it shouldn't: You're lounging in your armchair, YouTube is playing, and the rehearsal for the VE Day 80 Parade on May 5, 2025 is flickering across the screen. In the background, the charming, slightly cheeky music of Ray Davies and the Kinks (The Kinks Collection with the Crouch End Festival Choir, tracks 4 "Victoria" to 15 "All Day and All of the Night") purrs. The Household Cavalry, Irish Guards, Royal Marines and Ukrainian guests march with metronome-like precision from Wellington Barracks via Birdcage Walk towards Parliament Square and back from Admiralty Arch. The steady trudging is so soporific that you gently doze off... and only at track 15, "All Day and All of the Night", you startle up again. Damn it, the evening is over! You had big plans for an epic parade movie with "Victoria" as the soundtrack, but the chance has been missed. Anyway, you take the video as it went, with the quiet Kinks music rippling like an old buddy – and the horse droppings that the horses have "creatively distributed" all over The Mall. That's good, isn't it?
The Household Cavalry is like a Kinks song: proud, tradition-conscious, but with a mischievous grin – and a little "oops" moment. Her horses, the shining groomed stars of the show, trot so evenly that it seems almost hypnotic. Each hoof beat is like a beat in a Ray Davies chorus, except that these four-legged friends decorate the street with horse droppings on the side – a natural "shout out" to the London street sweepers! The Mounted Band, in scarlet uniforms, keeps the rhythm as the horses march with their heads held high, as if they know that their "legacies" are the true basis of conversation in the parade. This monotonous but majestic trotting, coupled with the laid-back irony of the kinks, makes the video the perfect food for falling asleep – no wonder you dozed off!
The Kinks music fits like a cozy pajamas: "Victoria" (unfortunately sleepy) would have accompanied the regal splendor of the cavalry, but the later tracks like "Tired of Waiting for You" lull you to sleep as the troops and their horses pave the road with regularity (and apples). During "All Day and All of the Night" you wake up and see: The parade marches on, the Ukrainian guests remind us of unity, and the horse droppings glitter almost poetically on The Mall. A video that celebrates the monotonous splendor of marching, which combines kinks vibes with British humour and makes the horses – along with their "artistic contributions" – a legend. Nap or not, this is London at its finest!
Good night!
